this is a very real problem! and unfortunately, something similar happens to people of color and adults as well. always try and tie it down to something else when, in fact, the disorder has been clearly present the whole time. it’s so damaging.
orochimaru is canonically nonbinary… he was introduced as a woman and had a female body for a large chunk of his screentime, indiscriminately presents as both male and female in both body and styles of clothing (and not only for disguises but casually too, for those people who argue it’s just cover), specifically refers to himself as a ‘parent’ over ‘father’ and refuses to specify when pressed for a gendered parental identity, consistently uses gender-neutral personal pronouns (’watashi’) and favours feminine speech over masculine (’kashira’), his ‘true’ form is a writhing genderless mass of snakes, i mean the list is literally endless
i’m not gonna label “my orochimaru” trans cuz i’m not changing any aspect of his character. none of the above facts can be denied, they’re all canon so whether kishimoto acknowledges it or not he has written a character who can be described as non-binary, genderfluid, agender, genderqueer, gender-neutral, or whatever term one prefers.
people who insist he’s cis and refuse any other possibilities are generally missing the point of his character because his whole ideology is based on how the one consistent thing is change. he adopts many faces and identities and forms and tacks as many things as he can onto his identity.
